When it comes to protecting our hair we often think of damage from bleach, hair dye and heat tools but what about the damage caused by environmental factors?
Things such as temperature changes, chlorine, and sun exposure can also do serious damage to your delicate locks, particularly if your hair is bleached or chemically treated in any way.
Not to worry, with some knowledge and quality protective products to help limit the damage, you can still experience hair that is nourished, shiny and smooth.
Read on to discover Blown Lux’s top tips for protecting your hair from environmental damage.
Sun Damage
Just like our skin, our hair can experience damage from overexposure to the sun. UV light creates free radicals that oxidizes lipids and proteins compromising the integrity of your hair and leaving it vulnerable to breakage.
How do you protect your hair from the sun? Well just like with your skin, keeping your hair safe from the sun under a hat can be the easiest way. Also, if you’re in the sun quite regularly make sure you’re using hydrating hair masks weekly to help restore the moisture to your hair and keep it as healthy as possible.
Pool Water
Although the weather’s getting cooler now if you’re hitting the indoor pool you might want to consider how the chlorine and salt in the water is affecting your hair quality. The chlorine and salt is extremely damaging and can lead to dry and brittle hair.
An easy way to minimise damage before swimming? Soak your hair in clean water before you get into the water. Your hair can only hold so much water, so if you really soak it in clean water before swimming, it will soak up less of the damaging pool water.
Once you’re out of the water, rinse your hair with clean water again and apply a leave-in conditioner to help bring the moisture back to your locks.
Temperature Changes
Switching from the cold outdoors to the heated indoors or vice versa isn’t just a shock to your body temperature but also to your hair.
If you’re constantly switching back and forth between different temperature extremes, your hair is going to struggle to balance its hydration level and possibly damage the hair cuticle. So hair loses its shine and suppleness and becomes dry and brittle.
The best way to protect your hair? Avoid overusing styling aids such as waxes, pomades and heavy creams and instead, use products that penetrate the hair fibre to soften strands yet also give some shape to your style.
